A Day in the Life of a Customer Service Representative – Deun Williams


How do you define ‘customer service’? According to Investopedia, “Customer service is the direct one-on-one interaction between a consumer making a purchase and a representative of the company that is selling it”.

But one-to-one interaction isn’t really the key to customer service is it? It’s ‘good’, ‘great’ or ‘outstanding’ interaction that makes the difference. When I asked Deun (pronounced DEE-on) Williams, she agreed. Having worked at Event Decor Direct for the past year, Deun said she believes customer service is “a healthy balance of ensuring the customer is heard, and the issue is resolved while still representing the company and applying policy”.

Deun considers her greatest customer service skills to be:

• ability to develop positive relationships with customers; • attention to detail; • ability to communicate clearly; • use of positive language; and • ability to read and understand customers.

I was curious where Deun had learned these skills or who had inspired her. Without hesitation, she said her grandmother has been the biggest influence on her life. Growing up, she spent most of her free time with her grandmother. Deun describes her grandmother as a very giving person who would do anything she could to help someone in need. But, Deun continued, she is also a very strong-willed woman. If her grandmother puts her mind to it, you can guarantee anything can be done. At the same time, she is a kind, respectful woman with a listening ear.

Like most of the staff at Event Decor Direct, Deun Williams describes a typical day as ‘busy, busy, busy’. She follows up with customers about their questions, ensures orders are processed and customers are aware of deadlines and possible shipping delays. Not a day goes by when Deun isn’t supporting team members and encouraging sales for the company.

Deun’s favorite part of her job is building rapport with customers and hearing about how well products turned out for events. The downside of her work is telling customers that an inventory item has been discontinued or has been sold out so quickly they may have to change their design plans.

But Deun works hard to do the best for her customers and believes they would say she is able to multi-task, is a great listener and always ready to help.

On the personal side of her life, Deun has a one-year-old son and needs lots of shut-eye to successfully balance working full-time and raising a child. When she’s not spending time with her babe, Deun likes to listen to R&B. Her current favorite is Bryson Tiller.
